Aquaculture is agriculture: Why fish farmers are farmers too

Sometimes we forget that fish farmers are farmers too!

Many understand that farmers raise chickens, pigs and cows… though they think raising fish is different.

But it’s not!

The more we interact with other farmers thanks to this fish delivery gig, the more we learn just how similar all of us farmers are.. regardless if we’re farming the land or the water!

We all worry about our animals. We worry about the weather, the changing climate, and if we’ll make it through the season.

Most of us drive tractors, work long hours, and live on site. Many of us are second or third generation farmers, raising our kids and loving the small towns we live in.

We care deeply about the environment, our communities and the world we’re leaving to our kids. We all know that raising food is going to have some sort of impact on the planet, and we try to lessen that as much as possible.

We take some of the highest risks in the supply chain, despite having the lowest margins.

We all fight misconceptions here and there. And many of us can chat your ear off for hours if you visit our farms, because we’re just that passionate about what we do.

And we all raise food — delicious, glorious, sustainable food that isn’t shipped in from overseas, but grown right here in your backyard!

This is why we have a big banner in our hatchery that says “AQUACULTURE IS AGRICULTURE” to celebrate this every day!
