How old is a fish when it’s harvested?

Would you believe almost THREE years old?

Trout, char and salmon are typically harvested between 30 to 36 months. That’s over 1,000 days of feeding, raising and caring for your fish!

It’s hard to get to know each individual fish in that time, but we definitely know the personalities of each group — some are jumpers , others are curious , or easily frightened , some school together and others explore, and they always say hello when it’s feeding time!

Fish are a bit different than most other farm animals because they’re cold blooded. That means if the water is warmer, they eat and grow a whole lot faster. But in the winter, their metabolism slows right down and they barely eat at all!

It can take a year to get them to 100 grams or 6 inches in cold spring water, but they can double that size in 3 weeks when the water temperature is 18C!

How long does a trout survive in the wild? Well funnily enough, it’s 3 years on average too!
