What is a barramundi (Australian sea bass)?

Barramundi is your taste of the tropics, as they’re originally from Australia.

Their name comes from a local Indigenous word meaning “large-scaled river fish”. Though they’ve lost their Aussie accents, because we raise them in Ontario!

The barramundi grow at an indoor farm near London called Sandplains Aquaculture We love visiting them in the winter, because the entire farm runs at 29C!

What’s their gender? Well that depends on their age. They’re born as males, but a number of barramundi change to female at about three or four years. (How progressive!)

And you can always tell their age by counting rings on their scales, just like counting rings on a tree.

And one female barramundi can produce upwards of 32 million eggs, which is almost the entire population of Canada!

Barramundi win over all taste buds, even non-fish eaters. They’re one of the most mild and light fish tasting fish, but that doesn’t mean they lack all the health goodness fish bring. They have some of the highest protein and omegas!

And the last thing we’ve learned is that those people who love the barramundi, LOVE the barramundi. It’s had a loyal fan base every since we started offering it last year.
